A 31 year old Glen Garioch, distilled in 1990 and matured in a surprisingly active hogshead. Bottled at natural cask strength of 53.9%, with an outturn of just 201 bottles.
Sometimes we try a cask and immediately we feel we just absolutely have to bottle it. This was definitely one of those casks.
Captured at a perfect age and strength, this Glen Garioch showcases everything that is great about old, and old style, Scottish single malt whisky. The hogshead was active but balanced, it has added a lot of complex and deeply resinous herbal and spice flavours to the whisky. These knit beautifully with the natural weight and waxiness of the distillate. There's fruits, teas, tobacco, earthy tones - there's everything going on here that you - yes YOU - adore about longer aged, older style highland malt whiskies. And this one really is older style, given blind you'd be forgiven for thinking it was distilled two decades earlier.
Nose: Well waxed tables and lacquered panelling join underripe banana, greengage and gooseberry fool. Canvas sacking, whet stones and machine dust sit alongside golden tobacco, golden syrup and a single drop of vanilla extract. Water reveals a far leafier character with ferns, reeds and damp leaves alongside gooey caramel.
Taste: Papaya, mirabelles and lime lead into a wave of semi-industrialness with cracked leather seats, brake dust, lamp oil and black tea. Polished oak and hessian follow with dry oakiness in tow. Reduction offers simple syrup sweetness with brass polish and a dash of mango tropicalness.
Finish: Long with lime, tobacco and parchment paper.
